The new version of the SLK with project number R171 was made in 2004 and aesthetically differs from the previous especially in the front where, with a pronounced central bulge in the boot, was wanted in some way to remember the appearance of the Formula 1 deployed in World Championship with McLaren.

Even the facility of opening and closing of the roof has been upgraded, and is declared that the complete movement takes just 22 seconds.

Even the engines were modified and a few times, unlike the old location and while keeping the same names, numbers that do not correspond in fact to distinguish cylinder engines fitted.
