In 1993 a restyling involved, for the first time, also the plates, creating the third series, named for the first time, Class E. A change was above the bonnet (with new radiator grille-integrated), the lid of the boot (with a different collection in the area of the plate) and of the interior (center console and coatings).

Gasoline engines, now all with 4 valves per cylinder head, had engine capacities of 2 (136cv), 2.2 (150hp), 2.8 (193cv) and 3.2 liters (220cv), while diesel, all 4 valves per cylinder, cubic had to 2 (95cv), 2.5 (113cv) and 3 liters (136cv). For version 4x4 4-Matic was available only the old inline 6-cylinder petrol engine of 2962cc, with distribution shaft, from 180hp. At the top of the range remained the E420 and E500. With the exception of those two (only available in 4-door sedan with a once-off), the range was proposed with three levels of finish: Classic (basic version) Elegance (luxury version) and Sportline.
The range of the W124 list came out in a phased manner since 1995, when it disappeared, the 4-door sedan. The station wagon lasted until 1996, while the coupe came out of the catalog the following year. The last W124 to leave the list was a convertible, eliminated in 1998. Sedan and station wagon have been replaced by the corresponding versions of the W210 E-Class, while the place of the coupes and convertibles was taken from the corresponding variants of the CLK first series.
