Announced on 9 October 2000, the Series 2 Elise was a redesign, using a slightly modified version of the chassis of the Lotus Elise Series, the same type of engine and a new electronic control unit developed by Lotus.
The design paid homage to the design of the M250, not yet commercialized, and was the first Lotus to be designed entirely by computer. The Series 2 is built on the same production line created in Hethel (UK) for the Vauxhall VX220/Opel Speedster. Both cars shared many parts, including the chassis, but engine and transmission are different. Version Vauxhall / Opel currently no longer in production.
The Series 2 was also available in the model 111S with variable valve timing engine with 160 hp, and the model "Sport 160", ie the model 111S of the 2nd series with sports package. These two models are no longer in production since 2005
111R
This model, marketed in North America under the name Federal Elise is powered by an engine with aluminum head and block metal matrix composite (MMC) from 141 KW (189 HP) designed by Yamaha and manufactured by Toyota, even the gear and Toyota. The Lotus Elise 111R is the first to be equipped with the ABS, and is acclaimed as the best Elise, on its thrilling performance (acceleration from 0 to 100km / h in 5.2 seconds).
The 111R was the first to be marketed in the U.S. in the summer of 2004. Elixir of approval required the intervention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which offered an exemption for three years for the car, which did not meet the stringent U.S. standards. The next generation of Lotus Elise, expected in 2007, must comply with all safety rules, unless the Lotus does not obtain an extension, as happened on several occasions with the Esprit.
This model was replaced in 2006 by Elise and the Elise R Sport Racer (Limited Edition).
Exige
Launched in 2004, the Series 2 Lotus Exige, comes with the same engine of the Toyota and a six-speed gearbox as the Elise 111R.
At the Lotus Exige Series 2 was followed in limited edition (only 50 pieces), the Lotus Sport Exige 240R, which incorporates compressor and intercooler developed by Lotus for Toyota engine, allowing it to reach a power of 181 KW (243 HP). The Exige Sport accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in under 4 seconds).
