In the late seventies it was necessary to adapt the XJ, whose sales remained still incurred at the new decade to come. The task of achieving a competitive sedan Jaguar now cornerstone of the entire range, the eighties was assigned to pencil Pininfarina. Turin designer intervened significantly on the lines of the XJ more inclined windscreen, removal of baffles, front grille, revised taillights expanded, unpublished chrome bumper and new tail (thicker and with rubber profile). The excellent work of Pininfarina made the sedan more modern English, but still has a special charm that no competitor could boast.

The interior, completely redesigned, re-acquired the typical Jaguar opulence through the extensive use of natural leather and burr walnut. Few, however, new techniques. The 6-cylinder 4.2-liter benefited from adjustments to food (injection valves and larger, leading to an increase of the maximum power, which touched 208 hp at 5000 rpm and maximum torque, which reached the 34 kgm at 2900 turns, but already were available at 1500 rpm 29 kgm), while, on the face of broadcasting, were made available two new changes: a 5-speed Getrag manual and an automatic 3-speed (GM Turbo Hydra-Matic on the 5.3 V12 Borg-Warner Model 66 on 6-cylinder 3.4 and 4.2 liters). For the first time too, were offered 2 Productions: standard and Sovereign (the latter much more rich and reserved for versions 4.2 and 5.3 V12).

In 1981 the V12 engine benefited from a new cylinder head with redesigned combustion chambers and efficiency improvement (in case the new unit was called HE: High Efficiency). The changes allow an increase in power and reduce 295cv, while consumption by 25%. Since 1984 the Sovereign became the ABS as standard.

The 3 Series 6 cylinder (3.4 and 4.2) exit list in 1986, while production of the 12 cylinders continued until 1992 because of the inability to mount the bulky V12 XJ on 40. In 1992 both the V12 engine compartment dell'XJ 40 were mocificati to make possible the transplantation, which allowed him to end the production of a car in price by more than twenty years.
