In 1994 the XJ40 was replaced by the X300 series. From the technical point of view there were big news (the X300 was a mere evolution of the XJ40), but body and interior were completely redesigned.

From the stylistic point of view the XJ Series represents a return to classic, as it offers forms clearly inspired by the 3 Series, while the interiors were a perfect combination of classic (skin and roots everywhere) and modern. XJ was the first to take the plastic bumpers.

The main technical innovations affecting engines (who adopted the variable valve timing and a more advanced electronic control), automatic transmission (which was added to the sequential manual function) and the rear suspension (which could be equipped with a "CATS" by electronic management Buoyancy). More significant, however, the changes to the engine supercharged R version, which as well as for an aspirated versions, got 2 displacement compressors and intercoolers. Power sketch 321cv.

The range consisted of the X300 version 3.2 (3293cc, 211cv), 4.0 (3980cc, 244cv), 4.0 R (3980cc, 321cv) and 6.0 V12 (5993cc, 318cv), in the Standard Equipment (only 3.2), sport (3.2, 4.0 and 4.0 R) and Sovereign (4.0 and 6.0 V12). The Sovereign was also available in LWB with a lengthened wheelbase of 10cm.
